What is Baynanza?
The early 1980s marked the beginning of a monumental effort by Miami-Dade County to save Biscayne Bay. The Bay was suffering from pollution and the marine environment of the Bay was in steep decline. Baynanza was created as part of a larger effort to save the bay.
Baynanza is a celebration of Biscayne Bay and its importance as one of our most important ecological systems in South Florida. While Baynanza includes more than 40 great events spanning from March to April, the event that has become nearly synonymous with this celebration is the Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day.
This community event had more than 7,500 registered volunteers in 2011, and they collectively removed a record amount of more than 44 tons of garbage from the shorelines of Biscayne Bay and nearby islands.
Please join us for the 30th Anniversary celebration of the Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day on Saturday, April 21, 2012, and let's work together to collect even more trash than this year!
Online registration for the Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day -- for volunteers and boaters -- is expected to kick off in mid-February.
