Adopt-a-Buoy
Two more Mooring Buoys installed at the Half Moon Archaeological Preserve
In 2009, Environmental Resources Management launched the Miami-Dade Pilot Mooring Buoy Program. The purpose was to establish a system of mooring buoys for recreational vessels to protect natural and artificial reefs from damage caused by boat anchors.
As of October 2010, 24 buoys are available for use at various locations off Miami-Dade County's shores, from Sunny Isles Beach south to Key Biscayne. When completed, 37 individual moorings will be located at nine different sites throughout Miami-Dade County. These sites include popular natural and artificial reef sites, as well as an archaeological preserve.
Funding is needed for the installation of the remaining buoys and the ongoing maintenance required for the 24 buoys installed. Learn about adopting a buoy if you would like to help! The future of the Mooring Buoy program depends on the Adopt-a-Buoy program success in collaboration with local schools, companies and non-governmental agencies.
