Forest Management in Miami-Dade County

When you look around at the trees and plants that surround us in Miami-Dade County, think of how essential they are to our survival. Not only do they provide us with oxygen to breathe, but also remove CO2, a pollutant, from the air. They provide us with food, attract wildlife, and enhance our neighborhoods, making them cooler and more peaceful. Think about it, areas that are surrounded by trees and plants are often the most attractive destinations. So it’s no wonder why maintaining this resource is vital.

The land area in an average American city has 25-33% tree cover. Miami-Dade County’s tree cover is estimated at 10% due to loss from Hurricane Andrew, development and citrus canker. Environmental Resources Management is committed to rebuilding our tree canopy through the Adopt-a-Tree Program and various other restoration initiatives.

Environmental Resources Management is also charged with maintaining forest communities to ensure that they continue to survive and are productive. This includes methods like prescribed fires and prohibiting the distribution of certain exotic species. Permits are also required for the removal of certain types and sizes of trees in Miami-Dade County.
