Stormwater Utility

The Stormwater Utility Section is part of the Water Management Division. Although stormwater utilities are relatively new, they are quickly becoming the means by which local governments can meet the responsibility for properly managing the environmental impact of stormwater pollution as well as the need to provide adequate flood protection.

Miami-Dade County is one of more than 140 local governments in Florida that has established its own Stormwater Utility. Now, more than ever, local governments must respond to greater challenges as it protects the public's health, safety, and welfare.

Article V, Section 24-51 of the Code of Miami-Dade County, Florida provides for the creation of a Stormwater Utility for the collection of fees sufficient to plan, construct, operate, and maintain stormwater management systems. The fees are assigned to residential and non-residential properties and the fees determined as a function of equivalent residential units (ERU) for residential properties and by determining the impervious area for non-residential properties.

The Utility funds canal and drainage improvement projects and maintenance of all secondary drainage systems in unincorporated Miami-Dade County and within participating municipalities.
