Sign your kids up for winter camp

Winter break is coming. Our winter camps will thrill and challenge youngsters, ages 6-14, with a variety of activities from fitness, sports, and arts and crafts to games and exciting field trips. Camps will be held Dec. 27-30, 2016 - Jan. 3-6, 2017, Tuesday-Friday, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with early drop-off available at 7:30 a.m. and late pick-up until 6 p.m.

Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez appoints new Parks director

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez appointed George Navarrete as the new Parks director effective Nov. 17, 2016, replacing Jack Kardys who retires in January after a distinguished 36-year career at Miami-Dade Parks. Maria Nardi was appointed as the deputy director.

Styrofoam and plastic items banned from parks

Polystyrene, used to create Styrofoam and certain plastics, is a petroleum-based plastic that is considered our nation's fifth largest creator of hazardous waste. Starting July 1, 2017, the approved resolution prohibits the sale or use of all polystyrene food-service articles, such as coolers, plates, bowls, cups, lids, to-go containers, cutlery, tableware, boxes, bags, wrappings, and others.

Healthy Choice Clinics by Walgreens

Healthy Choices Clinics by Walgreens is a collaboration between Miami-Dade Parks Recreation and Open Spaces and Walgreens which provides local clinics where Active Older Adults, 55 and over, can receive Blood Pressure Screenings and flu, pneumonia and tetanus shots.

Register for Fit2Play afterschool camps

Registration for Miami-Dade Parks' Fit2Play Afterschool program is now open. This nationally-acclaimed and proven program is designed to help kids discover the ''fun'' in fitness and develop healthy habits for a lifetime.

Kids will receive homework help, followed by fully-supervised activities focused on fitness, nutrition and wellness, while also developing their appreciation of nature, science and the cultural arts.
