Nominate an outstanding woman
Nominations are now being accepted for the 28th Annual In the Company of Women Awards Ceremony, presented by Macy’s. Deadline to submit a nomination is Oct. 16.
Winners will be awarded at the ceremony on March 3, 2016, at the Coral Gables Country Club.
Divers with disabilities gain a sense of freedom
Veterans, adults and youth ages 10+ with disabilities will have an opportunity to escape gravity for a brief time and scuba dive with a certified scuba diving volunteer on Oct. 17 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., at A.D. Barnes Pool.

Good health may be linked to nature
According to Ming Kuo, the Director of the Landscape and Human Health Laboratory at the University of Illinois, there is a correlation between nature health and our immune system. Kuo states that nature acts like a multivitamin for the body and our immune system plays a significant role in every one of the diseases that nature protects against.
AvMed to refuel Active Older Adults at parks
From Sept. through Nov., AvMed will set up charging stations with a variety of whole fruits and healthy smoothie recipes at Active Older Adults program hubs throughout Miami-Dade. AvMed Benefits Consultants also will be available at select parks to present Medicare information sessions.
Director Jack Kardys installed as FRPA President
Director Jack Kardys was installed as the president for the Florida Recreation and Park Association (FRPA) during its Annual Conference and Exhibit Show in Orlando. In the additional role, Kardys will be leading a seven-member Board of Directors, representing 1,600+ FRPA members and more than 270 parks and recreation agencies in the state of Florida.
As the FRPA’s new president, he will continue to guide and represent the Association for the one-year term of the post. This includes representing the FRPA at state-wide educational sessions and meetings attended by professionals who provide parks and recreation services; at Florida legislative sessions, when necessary; and in discussions with external groups and state agencies who impact the field of parks and recreation.
Tom Sawyer Island featured in Magazine
Amelia Earhart Park's Tom Sawyer Island was featured in the September issue of "Landscape Architect & Specifier News", an industrial trade magazine for commercial landscape specifiers. In the feature, the inspiration of the playground designer Karen Cheney, the different playground equipment installed, and a brief history of Amelia Earhart Park.
Free Healthy Choices Clinics for Active Adults
Healthy Choices Clinics by Walgreens is a collaboration between Miami-Dade Parks Recreation and Open Spaces and Walgreens which provides local clinics where Active Older Adults, 55 and over, can receive Blood Pressure, Glucose and Cholesterol Screenings and immunizations for Flu, Pneumonia and Shingles.
