Agricultural Uses in Open Land Subareas 1 (C-9 Basin) and 4 (East Everglades)

On August 2, 2011, the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners adopted Ordinance 11-59 providing for agricultural uses in Open Land Subarea 1 and Open Land Subarea 4, as designated on the County's Comprehensive Development Master Plan (CDMP).

Permitted Uses:

The following uses are permissible on land in Subareas 1 and 4, subject to restrictions outlined in Section 33-279 of the County's Zoning Code:

  1. Barns and Sheds for cattle or stock
  2. Barns and sheds for storage of equipment
  3. Beekeeping
  4. Farms
  5. Fish pools
  6. Fruit and Vegetable Stands
  7. Groves
  8. Greenhouses or nurseries, commercial
  9. Horticultural farming – commercial
  10. Hydroponics or other chemical farming
  11. Nurseries – horticultural
  12. Seed drying facilities
  13. Truck gardens
  14. Raising or keeping of 2 hogs per site
  15. Raising or keeping of 2 of any of the following per acre: cows, horses or other equine animals
  16. Raising or keeping of 3 of any of the following per acre: goats or sheep
  17. Raising or keeping of 40 of any of the following per acre: chickens, poultry, rabbits or fowl

Uses Requiring a Certificate of Use:

The following uses are permissible on land in Subareas 1 and 4, subject to restrictions outlined in Section 33-279 of the County's Zoning Code and issuance of a Certificate of Use by the Department of Planning and Zoning:

Raising of keeping of cows, horses or other equine animals, goats, sheep, chickens, poultry, rabbits or fowl in excess of any of the above thresholds, only upon issuance of a Certificate of Use (CU) for the property where the uses are to be conducted, subject to site plan approval by the Department.

The Certificate of Use application must be accompanied by a site plan indicating, at a minimum, onsite stormwater retention and waste stream management. For information on applying for a Certificate of Use, please visit the following link: http://www.miamidade.gov/planzone/zoning_c_u.asp

Uses Requiring a Zoning Hearing:

The following uses are permissible only upon approval after public hearing, as provided in Section 33-279 of this Code. For floodplain management purposes, the application package must include a site plan which indicates 1) existing and proposed locations of structures, fences or buffers; 2) onsite stormwater retention; and 3) waste stream management.

  1. Dude ranch
  2. Hog farm or hog raising in excess of 2 hogs

The Zoning Hearing application must be accompanied by a site plan indicating, at a minimum, existing and proposed locations of structures, fences or buffers; onsite stormwater retention; and waste stream management.
