A new mixed-use development soon will bring affordable housing and economic revitalization to Brownsville.
On Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at 10 a.m., Miami-Dade County officials and other dignitaries will break ground on Brownsville Transit Village, a 5.8-acre, joint-development project next to the Brownsville Metrorail station. The project will feature 467 affordable housing units, with five midrise apartment buildings, townhomes and a parking garage, as well as ground-floor commercial space and Metrorail station improvements, such as an additional passenger drop-off lane and attractive landscaping.
"Brownsville Transit Village will greatly benefit low-income families and the elderly in this community, who often find it difficult to afford high-quality housing,'' said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson.
The project will be built in five phases, each geared toward providing housing for low-income families, the elderly and the entire Brownsville community. Brownsville Transit Village residents will benefit from immediate access to rapid transit and amenities such as a community center, a computer lab and an exercise room. In addition, onsite community programs will offer literacy training, health and nutrition classes, and first-time homebuyer seminars.
"Joint-development projects like Brownsville Transit Village give local residents more than just easy access to public transportation. They also create an environment where residents can live, work and play - all without having to go too far from their community," said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan, who is also Chair of the County's Transit, Infrastructure and Roads Committee.
By offering easy Metrorail accessibility, the project also helps the environment by reducing traffic-related emissions.
"Brownsville Transit Village is an urban infill development that will offer local residents affordable, quality homes, while minimizing the impact that regular urban sprawl has on our environment," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez. "Metrorail joint-development projects like Brownsville Transit Village foster sustainable growth by combining residential and commercial use with immediate access to rapid transit."
