    System Projects

    Palmetto Station Traction Power Sub-Station

    This project will install a new Traction Power Substation at the existing Palmetto Station. This implementation is necessary to provide the required higher 600 Volts Direct Current (VDC) for the 136 new Metrorail vehicles scheduled to be delivered beginning 2013. This project is scheduled to be completed by the middle of 2012.

    Lehman Center Test Track

    This project will construct a new test track (2,500 feet long) at the existing Metrorail Lehman Center Facility. This implementation is necessary to provide the required test facility in support of the 136 new Metrorail vehicles scheduled to be delivered beginning 2013.  The test track will be used for inspection, testing and certification of the new fleet.  This project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2012.

    Lehman Yard Rehabilitation - Expansion Phase 1


    This project will construct five storage and two maintenance of way (MOW) tracks at the existing Metrorail Lehman Center Facility. This implementation is necessary to provide the required storage and transition facility in support of the 136 new Metrorail vehicles scheduled to be delivered beginning 2013.  This project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2012.

    Existing Metrorail Stations (Phase 1) Graphics and Signage Retrofit

    The project involves the development of a new graphic wayfinding system for effective communication at all the existing Metrorail stations.  This project is scheduled to be completed by March 2012 prior to the new MIC to Earlington Heights extension coming on line.

    Metrorail Central Control Upgrade

    This project will update the existing Metrorail portion of the MDT Control Center replacing the existing 26 year old system.  This upgrade/expansion will improve and support the day-to-day management for the operations and revenue service activities of the Metrorail system including the future rail corridors such as the MIC-Earlington Heights extension.  This project is scheduled to be completed by mid-2013.

    Metromover Replacement Vehicles

    Miami-Dade Transit is planning to replace each of its 29 Metromover vehicles, since they are approaching their useful design life of 20 years.  The new vehicles will include a sleek new design, greater reliability and will improve customer service.  Delivery of these new vehicles began in fall 2008 and is scheduled to be completed by August 2011.

    Metrorail Replacement Vehicles

    With Miami-Dade Transit's original Metrorail vehicles quickly approaching their useful design life of 30 years, the Department will replace the existing 136 vehicles.  These new Metrorail vehicles will include an elegant new exterior and interior design and will offer transit customers improved reliability and greater customer service.  The contract is expected to be awarded fall 2011, with delivery of the first four vehicles scheduled for December 2013.
