    Metrorail

MetrorailMetrorail iconMiami-Dade County's 22-mile, elevated rapid transit system runs from Kendall through South Miami, Coral Gables, and downtown Miami; to the Civic Center/Jackson Memorial Hospital area; and to Brownsville, Liberty City, Hialeah, and Medley in northwest Miami-Dade, with connections to Broward and Palm Beach counties at the Tri-Rail/Metrorail transfer station.

The 22 accessible Metrorail stations are about one mile apart, providing easy access for bus riders, pedestrians, and passengers dropped off and picked up. Parking is available at 17 Metrorail stations.

In accordance with the Department of Transportation's Americans with Disabilities Act (DOT ADA) Key Station rules, the following ten Metrorail stations are readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities, including those who use wheelchairs: Dadeland South, Dadeland North, South Miami, Douglas Road, Brickell, Government Center, Civic Center, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza, Tri-Rail and Okeechobee.

Download the Metrorail brochure Adobe (1.53 MB) or contact us at Miami-Dade Transit Customer Services, 305-891-3131, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    Romero Britto meterHelp fight homelessness

The Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust and Romero Britto, a renowned South Florida artist, have joined forces and created an innovative way for residents to help in the fight against homelessness.

Colorful parking meters have been designed to collect cash for the homeless in our community and have been placed throughout a number of transit facilities.

The meters can be located at the following Metrorail stations: Dadeland SouthDadeland NorthSouth MiamiUniversityDouglas RoadBrickell, Government Center, and Palmetto.

    Getting to the Platform

    • All rail stations have elevators, escalators, and/or stairs. Contact a security officer if you need assistance in using the elevator, or if there is an emergency on the platform level.
    • If a passenger using a wheelchair or mobility aid enters a Metrorail station and finds an inoperable elevator, MDT provides back-up accessible service within 30 minutes upon request.  See the Custom Protection Officer (CPO) at the station platform to request back-up accessible service.
    • Voice announcements on the train and signs provide information on the status of elevators at Metrorail stations. When an elevator is out of service, board the train again and ask a security officer at the next station to arrange for free transportation, which will arrive within 30 minutes from your request being received. Register to receive rider alerts on the status of elevators and escalators at Metrorail and Metromover stations.
    • Most stations have a center platform with tracks on both sides. However, Metrorail’s Civic Center, Santa Clara, Brownsville, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Northside, and Tri-Rail stations have split platforms with train tracks running through the middle. To get to the platform in these six stations, take the elevator, escalator, or stairs to the second level. Once on the second level, you must locate the elevator, escalator, or stairs leading up to the platform of your direction of travel. Listen for announcements or look for signs that indicate ‘Southbound Dadeland’ or ‘Northbound Palmetto.’

    Boarding for People with Disabilities

A Public Address System (PAS) announces the Metrorail direction of travel; a female voice announces the northbound train, and a male voice announces the southbound train.  Train Operators announce the next station both when leaving from a station where a stop has just been made and then again while approaching the next station.

The tactile tiles alert customers who are blind and visually impaired that they are getting close to the platform edge. For direct access to the reserved wheelchair space, enter a train car through the first set of doors. Other passengers with disabilities and senior citizens will find seats reserved for them next to every door

Priority Seating:  Two seats next to every door rail car are designated as priority seats for persons with disabilities and senior citizens.  Federal law requires that operators request other passengers to vacate priority seating when needed.  DO NOT sit in these areas unless you are elderly or are a person with a disability.

    Call Buttons

Every Metrorail car has three call buttons, which are located at the wheelchair space next to the first set of doors, next to the clear plastic panels, and next to the second and third set of doors. Call buttons may be used to alert the operator when you need additional time to leave the train. Call the operator several stations before you are ready to exit the train. You may also use the call buttons in case of an emergency.

    Safety in Rail Stations

If you see something suspicious, tell a transit employee or security officer or call 305-375-2700.

    • Hold on to handrails
    • Running inside the station is prohibited
    • Always hold your children's hands while in the station
    • Always stand away from the edge of the platform
    • Contact station personnel or use the passenger assistance telephone at the security officer's booth if you drop an object on the track, or in case of an emergency
    • Do not enter the guideway
    • Rollerblading and skating are prohibited in rail stations and garages.

For the safety and comfort of everyone, playing radios, cassette tapes, CDs, etc. without earphones; smoking; eating; drinking; and animals (except service animals) are not allowed on buses or trains.
