Buses on Shoulders becomes permanent

Proven program saves time and money

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) passengers can ensure faster rides and continue bypassing congestion on busy highways with the permanent approval of MDT's Buses on Shoulders program.

In March 2006, MDT entered into an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) to allow three Kendall-area routes - 204 (Killian KAT), 272 (Sunset KAT), and 288 (Kendall Cruiser) - to travel on the shoulders of state roads 874 (Don Shula Expressway) and 878 (Snapper Creek Expressway) as part of a three-year pilot program to demonstrate the feasibility of buses operating on highway shoulders.

Under the program guidelines, buses can enter the expressway shoulders when traffic slows to less than 25 mph. Once on the shoulder, buses can travel up to 35 mph, but must yield to entering and merging traffic, as well as emergency vehicles. The program has been a success with passengers, who are saving several minutes on their commutes.  It has also proven to be safe with no accidents reported and minimal disruption to traffic flow.

"The Buses on Shoulders program lets Kendall commuters beat heavy expressway traffic while they save on gas and help the environment by reducing their carbon footprint," said Miami-Dade Transit Director Harpal S. Kapoor.

MDT saves an estimated $150,000 in annual fuel expenses as a result of buses reducing idling time stuck in traffic.
